Announcing the Sherlocking Fan Fiction Contest!

We here at Sherlocking are pleased to announce the first ever Sherlocking Fan Fiction Contest!

The fan base for Sherlock has grown by leaps and bounds, and will likely continue to grow, with the series’ transmission in Canadian, American, and other markets. We have been lucky enough to have received a great deal of fan traffic, and have found ourselves coming across a wide range of interesting Sherlock-themed art, comics, videos, and prose fiction. We’ve just today created a new Fan Creations subforum for this very topic, and now we’d like to go a step further and sponsor a short form fan fiction contest.

Please check out the page we’ve dedicated to the contest (also linked from every page on the blog via “The Contest” on the navigation bar). A few important notes about the contest: All stories must be less than 1000 words; all stories must be appropriate for a general audience (no explicit sexual content, please); and creative incorporation of elements from the Holmes Canon is encouraged. A crack team of four Sherlocking judges will whittle down the submissions to five top candidates, post them on the blog, and let all of you loyal Sherlocking readers be the judges on which is your favorite!

Oh, and as an added incentive, the winner of this contest will receive a shiny new Eschenbach Designo, the pocket magnifier used by Sherlock Holmes in the series (see above). This could come in quite handy if you ever need to identify that a someone was a serial adulterer, right?

Submissions are open from now and running until midnight, GMT on November 16, 2010 — again, check out the rules for more information. You have approximately two and a half months to think of a story set in the world of Sherlock and John, and craft a clever one thousand words full of adventure and intrigue (or whatever else you’d like). We’d love to have as many of you contribute as would like to, as well as read your thoughts on this venture in the comments.

The contest is on!

Adventures On North Gower St

This is a cute piece in the Daily Mail on the boon that Sherlock has brought to Speedy’s Snack Bar, and it reveals who really lives in the flat above:

A BBC spokeswoman said they wanted to film on Baker Street but were thwarted by heavy traffic.
The flat above Speedy’s, in North Gower Street, is really home to two South Korean students, one of whom, Tae Kim, 33, said: ‘There have been lots of people taking photographs outside.’

It’s nice to see Speedy’s — here’s a Google Maps link to its location — getting extra business, and kudos to Gatiss, Moffat, and Vertue for not replacing the awning with something fictional. I do hope in the second series we get an explanation of Mrs Hudson’s relationship to the “snax and sarnies” shop some of us saw from the pilot footage, though.

One other thing we just noticed that we hadn’t seen mentioned is that the building just adjacent to Speedy’s (and the fictional 221B Baker St) on North Gower is the site of a blue plaque — in this case, Giuseppe Mazzini, Italian Patriot. Not significant for Sherlock, surely, but just another bit of interesting trivia for those of you planning on taking the time to scout out all the filming locations from series one before we get more episodes.

“Insane Levels Of Fanboy Detail”

Posted in Fans, The Canon on July 15th, 2010 by Sean – 8 Comments

As part of our continuing efforts to obsessively screencap and comment on every single tweet anyone involved with Sherlock has ever made, here’s an encouraging exchange between a fan and Steven Moffat that should make Holmesians smile.

Hooray for fanboy (and fangirl) detail, and for Gatiss and Moffat understanding the charm of the Canon’s many inconsistencies. Count me among those who hope that, in Sherlock, Watson’s war wound forever migrates, Watson’s “bull pup” makes an appearance (and quick disappearance), and that someone will eventually inexplicably refer to Dr John Watson as “James.”

In some of the comments on this blog and others, we’ve discussed whether or not it seems likely we’ll see an appearance of Mycroft Holmes or Professor Moriarty this series. What elements of the Holmes Canon and other “fanboy details” are you hoping to see?

Interested in Sherlock? Curious about this Cumberbatch person? Check out Benedict Cumberbatch Online for photo galleries, forums, video, news, and more. The site has been up and running for over a year and a half, with a lot of great offerings for fans and newbies alike.

A quick search on Sherlock turned up some posts on the series and information about the filming of the pilot in Wales earlier this year.
